EMBODIED was conceptualized with the purpose of celebrating the human body and exploring our relationship with it. Each subject was invited to be photographed with a focus on the specific areas of their body they have struggled with in some way. To some this was an opportunity to share aesthetic vulnerability, to others it meant disclosing physical ailments or chronic pain. Models were also asked to contribute a hand written piece detailing their experience and relationship with the areas photographed, and/or how it felt to have a camera turned on them for this purpose.
Participants had full control of the extent of personal exposure revealed by their contribution. While this installation was created to honor and showcase the infinite variety in the human form, for some there was also an unexpected therapeutic outcome as I watched self-criticism give way to acceptance and ultimately appreciation, highlighting the beauty of our differences.
